Food Standards Australia

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is a Commonwealth statutory agency with the responsibility of developing and maintaining the Food Standards Code (the Code).

State and Territory Health Departments and the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) enforce the Code. For example, in NSW the Food Act 2003 provides in Section 9 that a food is unsuitable if it contains chemicals or metals in excess of the concentrations allowed under the Code.

Part 1.4 of the Code deals with Contaminants and Residues in foodstuffs. In particular Part 1.4.3 deals with Articles and Materials in Contact with Food and provides that,

"It is the responsibility of food manufacturers and retailers to ensure that they comply with all relevant legislation."

And notes that Standards Australia has developed an Australian Standard for Plastics Materials for Food Contact Use, Australian Standard AS2070-1999.
